1773 regulating act salient features for UPSC exam-
Through this act British government started to regulate the works of East India company in India. This act provided the base of central administration in India.
By this act, first time British government recognized that company was also doing political and administrative works in India. Some of the features of this act are-
- Act designated the governor of Bengal as governor general of Bengal. The first governor general of Bengal was Warren Hastings.
- governor general of Bengal was given four member executive Council to help him.
- The Bombay and Madras governor which were earlier equals to each other for now made subordinate to governor general of Bengal.
- This act also provided for establishment Supreme court of Calcutta. So In 1774 the supreme court of Calcutta was established at Fort William with one chief justice and three other judges.
- The servants of Company were also banned from indulging in private trade. They were also banned to accept present or bribes from the Indians.
- The court of directors which was the governing body was also made responsible to report to British government on the revenue, Civil and military affairs in India .
- Other important fact is sir Elizah impey was the first chief justice of Supreme court of Calcutta.
