Pitts India act of 1784 (UPSC) important features-

British Parliament introduced Pitts India act in 1784. It gave British government enormous control over companies affairs and administration in India. Some of the features of this act are-

  • It distinguished between commercial and political functions of the company.
  • Now Court of directors had to manage only commercial affairs and this act created a new body called Board of Control to manage political affairs.
  • Thus the importance of Pitt’s India act was that it established the  Dual system of control. 

  • Board of director consisted of chancellor of exchequer, a secretary of state and four members of privy council (appointed by crown).

  • Board of Control had powers to supervise and direct all operations of civil, military and revenue affairs of British possessions in India (East India company’s territories in India).
  • It is also important that this act first time called company’s territories as British possessions in India.
