Salient features of Charter act 1833 (UPSC)-
Laws made under previous acts were called regulations while laws made under Charter act of 1833 (UPSC) were called as Act. The most important provision of this act was that the designation of governor general of Bengal was changed to Governor general of India.
The governor general of India during Charter act of 1833 was Lord William Bentinck. So let’s study this act in detail-
- It was the final step towards centralization in British India. It made governor general of Bengal as governor general of India.
- This act provided the governor general of India all the Civil and military powers for the East India Company territories in India.
This act also deprived the governor of Bombay and Madras of their legislative powers and the Governor General of India was given exclusive legislative powers for the entire British India.
- Now only Governor General of India can make laws for the British territories in India. Thus for the first time, this act created a pan India government which had authority over entire British India.
- Act ended the activities of East India company as a commercial body and made it a purely administrative body.
- It also provided that the company’s territories in India were held by it in trust for his majesty, his Heirs and Successors.
- This charter act also attempted to introduce open competition for civil services but it could not happen because of opposition from court of directors.
